Overview
Students are not required to self-register their gaming systems. Consoles should work as soon as you plug it in, or join "R-MC Connect". If you experience any difficulties connecting, we will ask you to register the console so we can better assist you.
Issue
Students that connect their BYOD gaming computers to the dorm network will receive a “Strict Nat” type. This is by design based on security rules and the way the network is built to isolate gaming computers onto a public IP address away from college resources.
Matchmaking from one gaming system to another on campus is most likely not going to work. It will depend on how the particular game in question handles its multiplayer activities. Games that have a remote server hosting the games will allow multiple students to join just fine. However, if you try to leave the lobby and enter a game being hosted on an Xbox or PlayStation on campus: You will not be able to connect. In order to maintain the integrity and security of the network: ITS has put in place security rules that limit peer-to-peer gameplay.
Troubleshooting
- If for any reason your device isn't automatically connecting via the wire or the "R-MC Connect" wireless network, we ask that you go ahead and self-register your console like you would any other media device.
- If you don't register your device, ITS will have limited info which will make troubleshooting harder and make it take longer to get your device properly connected.
- Registering it before you call or email us will make things easier and get you back to gaming faster!
- If you still experience problems then request support. You will need to provide your console's wireless and/or wired MAC address when you contact us can help make the troubleshooting process faster.
