Connecting Entertainment Devices and Printers to the Network

Overview

Devices of this kind need be registered for wifi network access thru the self-service portal. Once the device is registered, it may be connected to the network. Entertainment devices that are not capable of authentication and are wireless must always connect to “R-MC Connect”. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Do not connect to wireless network yet. Doing so may cause this process to take longer.
  2. Power streaming device on and retrieve mac address (Use this table to find your device's MAC address or simply Google it).
  3. Go to deviceregistration.rmc.edu on your computer/phone/tablet and choose Self-Registration and log in using your R-MC username and password to fill out the form and register your media device.
  4. Name of the device can be anything. However, we suggest you label it something meaningful to assist in identifying it at a later time. I.E: "Bob's Roku", "Alice's wired Smart TV", "Caroline's Echo Dot", etc.
  5. Devices MUST have AirGroup enabled, and either set to "Personal" (Shared with only your account) or "Shared" (You may choose whose accounts you share this device with, like friends or a roommate, but you must also add yourself).
    • ITS has found that many devices work best when AirGroup is enabled and set to "Personal".
  6. After registering: Leave the device completely turned off for 10-15 minutes! This will allow it to receive the correct role on our network.
  7. Turn the device back on and connect to the "R-MC Connect" wireless network (Do NOT use the "R-MC" network).

You do NOT need to register your streaming device if is set up to connect using ethernet. Just plug it in an available port and it will dynamically give profile the device and grant appropriate access.

Issue

Entertainment device is self-registered but not working correctly, i.e. does not have the correct role to stream.

Troubleshooting
  • If you connected the device to the "R-MC Connect" wireless network before you registered it: Disable the device's wireless for 5-10 minutes or completely unplug it, then try reconnecting.
  • Make sure you entered the wireless MAC address when you registered the device. If the MAC address is wrong the device will not be accepted.
  • To change device options after creation, navigate back to deviceregistration.rmc.edu > log in > choose manage devices > find your device that is having an issue > edit the registration > update device.
  • If you still experience problems then contact Service Desk at helpline@rmc.edu or (804)752.8500.
  • Knowing your device's MAC address when you contact us can help make the troubleshooting process faster!
  • IoT devices that are NOT compatible with our WPA2 Enterprise network
    • Due to an August 2020 update by Google, Google Cast devices such as Chromecast and Home are not able to connect to our network. Students may instead try connecting their Google device to their computer or phone using their Mobile Hotspot as a suggestion.
  • Using AirPlay to wirelessly casting audio or video from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or an AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV will work if the entertainment device is registered in our portal. If you do not have airplay-compatible devices, do not put your secure device on the entertainment network because it will be isolated and still unable to talk to the TV. Please instead directly connect the two devices using an HDMI adapter.
  • ITS does NOT provide formal support for student BYOD printing over the wireless network and provides NO GUARANTEE that your printer will function on the secure wireless. For best results: ITS recommends that users print via a USB printer cable whenever possible.
