Overview
For safe travel, especially international travel, it is vital that you prioritize data security, financial protection, and personal safety. Back up your data, use secure networks (never connect to public, unsecure networks), inform your bank and cellular provider, and be aware of your surroundings.
Technology and Data Security Tips:
- Back Up Your Data: Regularly back up your data to cloud storage or external hard drives before traveling.
- Update Software: Install the latest operating system and anti-virus software updates before traveling.
- Secure Devices: Turn off file and print sharing, clear browser history, and be wary of public computers.
- Use Secure Networks: Only connect to secure wireless networks (like those in hotels) or use a VPN for sensitive activities.
- Disable Unnecessary Features: Disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and infrared when not in use.
- Protect Sensitive Information: Don't send sensitive messages via email and consider disabling laptop cameras and microphones.
- Change Passwords: Change all passwords used abroad upon returning home.
- Use a Privacy Screen: Consider using a privacy screen to protect your device's screen from prying eyes.
- Utilize VPN: Use a VPN if working with sensitive data. Faculty and Staff should use our Global Protect VPN on laptop/tablet/smart phone.
