Overview
Randolph-Macon College offers faculty and staff access to network and internet resources through wireless or wired connections while on campus. Faculty and staff personal (non-college issued) computers connecting to the Randolph-Macon network must meet certain criteria before being allowed to access the network. This is done through a process is called "On-boarding". On-boarding is required for all employee personal (BYOD) computers for both wired and wireless use on R-MC. Registrations are good for four years and must be renewed to obtain network access. Please see attached instructons for Windows and Apple operating systems.
A college-issued Windows device should NOT be on-boarded. Doing so will prevent it from accessing the network. All college-issued macbooks/iMacs are onboarded at deployment time with the end user for wired and wireless access. If a college-issued device is having trouble connecting to the network: Please submit a "fix network connection request" for resolution of the underlying connectivity issue.
Please review our attached suggestions to on-board your device(s) successfully.
Laptops and Desktops connecting to the network must meet the following criteria:
- Supported Operating System
- Windows 10 and 11
- macOS version 14.x (Sonoma) and greater.
- Randolph-Macon ITS does not offer support for Ubuntu Linux.
- A valid (active) anti-virus application must be installed (required for Windows, recommended for Macs) with real-time protection running and scans enabled and scheduled. Both Windows 10/11 and macOS versions have built in antivirus that are supported on the Randolph-Macon network. Recommended free antivirus programs at this time include Defender (Built-into Windows 10/11), XProtect (built into macOS), Avira, and Sophos. Other antivirus are supported as well but are not on the recommended list for the college. Subscription-based AV applications such as Norton and Kaspersky, are supported. McAfee, Webroot, and AVG are not supported at this time. If you have more than one AV application installed, your computer may fail health checks.
- Personal firewalls must be enabled on the computer.
- Date and time must be correct on the computer.
Issue
Trouble onboarding or staying connected.
Troubleshooting
- Forget the "R-MC Connect" network so that your device does not switch back and forth but stays on "R-MC", which is our secure network.
- On fac/staff personal computers (and college Macs), make sure that Clearpass OnGuard is running and the icon at the top of your screen is green.
- If your account is locked out due to a stale or incorrect password, this will also cause you to not be able to connect to the "R-MC" network.
